Ambassador of Thailand to the Russian Federation paid a courtesy call on Mr. Aleksei Gruzdev, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of the Russian Federation

On 28 December 2016 H.E. Dr. Kriangsak Kittichaisaree, Ambassador of Thailand to the Russian Federation, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Aleksei Gruzdev, Deputy Minister of Economic Development of Russia, on the occasion of the appointment of Mr. Gruzdev as Deputy Minister. The two sides discussed the economic cooperation between Thailand and Russia and the promotion of trade and investment in both bilateral and multilateral contexts, especially in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) with the view to preparing for the visit of the Russian President to Thailand later this year and this year’s 120th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries, bearing in mind also that the Office of Agricultural Affairs is being set up in Moscow.

During the meeting, Mr. Gruzdev expressed his readiness to further support trade and investment from Thailand, and to co-chair the 3rd Thai- Russian Sub-Committee on trade and economic cooperation which will be held in Thailand in the first quarter of 2017. In addition, Russia will support Thailand’s request for a Joint Feasibility Study for the free trade agreement between Thailand and the EAEU. The free trade agreement will expand a market for Thai products in the Eurasian region.

Thailand and Russia aim to boost their bilateral trade volume five times in five years. Thai investors have explored economic opportunities in the Russian Far East, especially in the areas of agricultural industry, logistics and fishery. Russian businessmen are also interested in the development of the rail system in Thailand. To enhance the economic cooperation, the Kasikorn Thai Bank has set up a partnership with the VTB Bank to offer banking services in both countries.
